I taught two full classes today. Each class is two hours long and I somehow managed to survive. I swear these kids are smarter than me. This job makes me wish I would've paid more attention in my English classes.

We passed by this burger place called Juicy Bun everyday, so tonight we finally decided to try it. A whole meal was about $6 and the burger was ginormous. You have to eat it with a knife and fork because it is so big. The food was really good so we will probably be going here more often.

First Day of Work.

Today was my first day teaching in front of a class. So from now on, I'll be known as Teacher Joe. Standing up in front of a bunch of kids was a whole new experience for me. It was frightening, but I managed to do it. I have about 8 classes I have to teach right now. The class I taught today was made up of students from about the ages of 8-12. Today just so happened to be the students oral test day, so I was responsible for testing each of them. Tomorrow, I will be teaching two more new classes, so we will see how that goes. One day down, one year to go.

I took the wrong bus home, but I saw these red lanterns on my walk back.

Long Day

So when we first got to Taiwan, the people at the airport checked our passports and visas. I got a 60 day visa but for some weird reason they stamped a 30 day visa in my passport. Today, for 3 hours, Todd and I were travelling around the city trying to get it fixed. We first went to the immigration office to get it changed. They said they didn't need to stamp my passport because it was just going to change in the computer. So we went back to the main office to tell them, and they told me I had to get a stamp or some sort of paper showing that I had a 60 day visa because I needed the proof so I could work. They then called the immigration office and told them that we needed the stamp/paper. We then took the train back to the immigration office and talked to the same desk and they kept telling us that they don't have any stamps or paper to give me. We went and called the head office and had them talk to the guy at the information desk. After 10 minutes of them talking on the phone, the guy finally came back with a piece of paper and stamp showing I had a 60 day visa. It was very frustrating.

We went to our schools today to meet with our academic directors. I'm really nervous about this job, but she said she had a good feeling, so we'll see how it goes. Todds director said that there was a miscommunication between him and the lady that hired us, so he doesn't have that many hours available. He may have to teach at multiple schools.

I found an IKEA and an Outback Steakhouse by my school today. I'm pretty stoked about it.

Dinner. Oversized cup of noodles. Oversized Sprite.

Todd and I went and signed our contracts today to work for Kojen teaching English.  We did all of our paperwork and did our medical exams. We are so lucky to get these positions and even more lucky to get close locations from our house. Our schools are only 2 subway stops away from each other and its about a 20-25min commute to get to our schools using the bus and subway. We both go to our schools tomorrow to find out more about our jobs.

We're here!

After about 20 hours of traveling, Todd (brother) and I finally made it to Taiwan. We will be staying here for a year teaching English. We didn't have any troubles except for when security went through my carry on because our camera equipment looked suspicious. We're spending our first day getting settled in and maybe go out to explore the city. So much to see, but we have a whole year ahead of us.
