3 Day Weekend

This weekend I was lucky enough to get a 3 day weekend. Saturday was the Dragon Boat Festival so there wasn't school. I wasn't able to go out though because the first day of my 3 day weekend, I ended up getting the stomach flu. Its Sunday night and I still feel sick. We pretty much just hungout at our apartment all weekend. We went out tonight though to meet up with a friend that just came into Taiwan. Our parents sent a care package with her, so we went and picked it up and also ate dinner with some of her family. While over there, they told us about a chiropractor that was nearby, so we thought we would go get our backs and necks popped to try and fix us. For the past 2 years, I've been getting headaches almost everyday. I thought I'd try out a chiropractor to see if popping my neck and back would help. So far it has felt a lot better. After popping everything, he used an Asian technique called gua sha, which is where they scrape parts of the body to help heal those areas. In my case, he scraped my neck with a tool to help with my headaches. It was quite painful, and this was the outcome.

He did this to both sides of my neck.

After the chiropractor, we went out to the night market.

Sunday

It was our day off today and it happened to be a pretty nice day. Sunny with blue skies. We walked around our area today to try and find a store since the one right next to us went out of business. We found a sweet street market with tons of different shops.

LOOTING SPREE!!!

Well... kind of. We were walking out to get some dinner when we noticed a million people running into a building. We thought it was the end of the world or something. We got curious to what was going on so we went inside and lo and behold there was pure chaos. We didn't understand what was going on, so we asked some lady there and she said they were closing the store and everything was super cheap so we went crazy and stocked up. There wasn't a set price for what you bought, the people there would just look at your stuff and throw out a price.

All of this was worth over $120 US but we got it for $40 US

Earthquake

So this morning there was an earthquake at about 5am. It woke both of us up. When I woke up, I thought I was just dreaming because my room was shaking. Here is a report I read this morning about the earthquake.

June 10, 2012 –TAIWAN A strong 6.0-magnitude quake struck off Taiwan early on Sunday, US seismologists said, but no tsunami warning was issued. The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake had a depth of 70 kilometers (40 miles) and hit around 5 am (2100 GMT Saturday), some 50 kilometres east of Su-ao in the northeastern Yilan County. Taiwan’s Seismology Centre recorded the quake, which was felt in Taipei and island wide, at 6.5 on the Richter scale. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center did not issue a warning. The National Fire Agency said there were no reports of damages or injuries. Taiwan lies near the junction of two tectonic plates and is regularly hit by earthquakes. In September 1999, a 7.6-magnitude tremor killed around 2,400 people in the deadliest natural disaster in Taiwan’s recent history. –Bangkok Post

2nd Week

Nothing new over here, just been working everyday. I work Monday through Saturday, so I'm staying pretty busy. Teaching has been a challenge, but I'm slowly getting the hang of it. The kids at my school are awesome and they are really smart. It has been raining pretty much everyday for the past week and a half, but it finally cleared up the last couple of days. It's super hot and feels like I'm constantly sitting in a sauna. Gotta love the humidity.

These are what the classrooms look like, and this is one of my classes. I gave them a quiz, so I was killing time by taking pictures.
